  • Petroski tabbed as Athletic Director of the Year - Oconee Enterprise

    The Georgia Athletic Directors Association has named Athens Academy Athletic Director Kevin Petroski the Class A Athletic Director of the Year.
    “It’s a tremendous honor,” Petroski said. “Any time you’re peers select you for any type of recognition it’s very much appreciated.”
    The position of athletic director can be executed in many different ways. It can be Laissez-faire. Some athletic directors choose to operate from the shadows, making calls from their offices and sitting in the press boxed of sporting events.
    Some get down in the dirt and take their hands and smear their influence over multiple programs throughout the athletic department. Petroski acts as both. He is hands on, but he also is hands off. Petroski values building relationships with other area athletic directors to improve the environment at Athens Academy.
    “I’ve made an effort to try to find ways for community involvement amongst our area schools,” Petroski said. “Things like building relationships with the athletic directors and working to do things for middle school sports as far as high school sports as far as the all star basketball game, we do a coach’s social before the year. All the other ADs are involved with this as well. Those are just things that I have really focused on trying to make sure that way that we can support our coaches and also promote what we’re trying to accomplish at Athens Academy and in the surrounding schools.”
    If there is something taking place related that is athletics related with Athens Academy involved, Petroski is there. The school offers 20 varsity teams. Petroski makes an effort to be there to support all 20 as well as the middle school programs.
    Looking down the Athens Academy Athletics’ Instagram page one can find videos of postgame interviews conducted by Petroski.
    It’s Petroski’s way of remaining involved with the student-athletes of Athens Academy. Petroski is a coach at heart. Before focusing solely on the administrative side of athletics Petroski spent 20 plus years as a coach. Admittedly, he misses the hands on part of the job.
    “That’s been the toughest part, trying to get to know student-athletes the best I can,” Petroski said. “Sometimes I get to know them through what the coaches share with me more so than I do with interacting with them. I’m not around them as much. My office is on the other side of campus so I don’t see them day in and day out a lot times. I just want them to know that I do support them and that’s why I attend a lot of the events and congratulate them and supporting them when things don’t go well. I think that’s important.”
    Coaches at Athens Academy appreciate the luxury of having an athletic director that promotes, supports and allows the coaches their freedom to operate.
    “He does a great job, he works tirelessly for our kids, our community and all of our athletes,” Athens Academy head football coach Josh Alexander said. “He really does a great job promoting our school whether it be through social media or in other ways. He does a great job communicating with our parents and making sure that they have a voice in our athletics... He does a lot on gameday. From parking spaces to concession stands all the way to getting people in and out safely... He does a really good job of keeping the kids and the school first, which is very important to me. He’s always going to do the right thing. He’s never going to do what’s in the interest of Kevin.”

  • Athens Academy’s Petroski garners state honor - ABH

    Congratulations to Kevin Petroski who was named Class A Athletic Director of the Year! Go Spartans!

    Late last year, Athens Academy’s Kevin Petroski learned he had been named the Region 8-A Athletic Director of the Year by the Georgia Athletic Directors Association, an award he previously received in 2011.
    And last week, Petroski was notified the GADA had turned it up a notch to name him Class A Athletic Director of the Year, no mean feat considering there are 51 public schools and 37 private schools fielding football teams in the classification, made up of the state’s smallest schools.
    “It’s an honor of course,” said Petroski on Monday afternoon. “I’ve had the good fortune of winning some state championships as a coach, but now that I’m in an administrative position, I would say this is the highlight of my responsibilities and role in this area. I want to emphasize how much my administrative assistants – Virginia Stutsman and Nita Woodruff – have contributed to this.
    “And they, along with Kalupe Booze, our athletics coordinator, and Richard Browning, who handles all the facilities for athletics, have really bought into what I want to see accomplished and my vision and helping me accomplish that along the way. You’ve got to have the support of those around you and hopefully they feel like I support them as much as they support me.”
    Petroski has served as athletic director at Athens Academy since 2008. He spent two years working in the Dean of Students’ office before transitioning to athletics. Prior to joining Athens Academy, Petroski was the first athletic director at Monsignor Donovan Catholic High School.
    “It’s awesome and well-deserved,” said Head of Schools John Thorsen, who nominated Petroski for the region honor. “I’m obviously biased, but I look at the quality of coaches and the programs we have, (with) so many homegrown kids competing at a high level. And Kevin has allowed a lot of that to happen pretty seamlessly for our programs.
    In his letter recommending Petroski’s nomination, Thorsen pointed out that in the time Petroski has been athletic director, Spartans sports teams have won 56 region championships and eight state titles.
    He also noted that in the last five years, Athens Academy has established an indoor baseball facility, finished an athletic turf field, added a new weight room, constructed a wrestling room and replaced its tennis courts. And two years ago, a video board was installed at Slaughter Field.
    Thorsen also wrote that Petroski has been instrumental in the development of a cohort of athletic directors from Athens Academy, Athens Christian, Cedar Shoals, Clarke Central, North Oconee, Prince Avenue Christian and Oconee County high schools that has “helped to develop positive school relationships, started discussions about athletic-related challenges and created opportunities for student-athletes to come together to compete.”
    The cohort, which has met on a monthly basis for close to a decade, has initiated a middle school football jamboree, postseason high school all-star basketball games and a football media day, among other events.
    The Albany native, who played college soccer at Georgia Southwestern and graduated from Georgia, coached and taught at Thomas Jefferson Academy in Louisville and then served as athletic director for Southwest Georgia Academy in Damascus before arriving in Athens.
    A Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA) and Certified Master Athletic Administrator (CMAA), Petroski also serves on the Athens Athletic Hall of Fame’s board of directors and is a member of the region’s executive committee.

         Athens Academy annually fields a competitive baseball team which typically advances to the state playoffs. The program focuses on individual skill development within a team environment. An emphasis is placed on team building through cooperation, discipline and personal growth. A knowledgeable coaching staff provides athletes with a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental and strategic components of baseball.
         So that our athletes receive quality instruction with a realistic opportunity for playing time, the size of teams in some sports is limited. Students "try out" for teams. Although there is no guarantee that a student will be selected for a specific team, the number and variety of offerings provide many opportunities for each player.
