Spartan Spotlight: Coach Darby Coxhead

Originally from Norcross, Coach Darby is currently a junior at UGA and serves as a community coach for Athens Academy's Middle School Cross Country and Soccer teams.

Five Questions with Coach Darby:

What do you consider to be unique about Athens Academy?
I love that at Athens Academy the coaches care about how each individual child is doing. They always want them to excel and improve but also to have fun…I also think Athens Academy is unique in the fact that it emphasizes being involved in many different things along with excelling academically.

What led you to coaching?
I initially got involved at Athens Academy because I’m a Wyldlife leader there with the Young Life ministry. I wanted to coach to get to know the Middle Schoolers and be able to form relationships with them. ..In addition, when I was growing up my dad coached my soccer team almost every year. Having him as a coach taught me a lot about how coaching is so much more than just helping someone get better at a sport. It's about mentoring and being a role model for them also.

Who was your favorite athlete while growing up?
Mia Hamm for sure! I aspired to be like her when I was a little girl and dreamed of being as good of a soccer player as her one day.

What superhero power would you like to have?
I would love to be able to teleport. The ability to be able to wish instantly to be at the beach or in the mountains or any other cool location would be awesome. Plus it would cut down on so much travel time. Now that would be efficient!

What is a fact about you that you are proud of but most people don’t know?
I've kicked a soccer ball to Mexico!... Well... really I just kicked it off a cruise ship that was anchored on the coast of Mexico.
