In addition to teaching seventh grade science, Michael Finnerty coaches middle school football for Athens Academy. Coach Finnerty is from Watkinsville and graduated from the University of Georgia, where he played intramural softball and flag football. We asked him five questions as part of the Spartan Spotlight:
What do you consider to be unique about Athens Academy?
It would be hard to imagine a more supportive and engaged community than Athens Academy. All faculty, staff, and families are truly devoted to promoting excellence, fun, and development in all areas of the school.
What led you to coaching?
When I chose to approach a career in teaching, I knew coaching would be something I definitely wanted to pursue. While academics are the foundation of grade school, I personally grew and learned so much from my coaches and from participating in school sports. From the time I graduated high school, I wanted an opportunity to get back to the sport of football which has always been a love of mine. Once I was given that chance, there was no hesitation!
What are your hobbies?
I enjoy exercising and have recently been trying to get more into running. My biggest hobby is spending time with my wife, Alison, and our two dogs, Ollie and Wrigley. In the fall, Georgia football is the highlight of our calendars. I like to whip up a good meal at home as much as I can, and really enjoying grilling and cooking barbecue. We also take full advantage of the great restaurants Athens has to offer! When I need "me" time, I'll usually go for reading whatever book I am working on at the time or going to the driving range to remember just how poor my golf game is!
As a child, which professional sports team was your favorite?
I have always been a BIG Atlanta Braves fan, and I was in the third grade in 1995 when they won the World Series! The Braves were definitely my childhood favorite professional sports team.
If you could take a trip anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
I love skiing and snowboarding when I have the opportunity (and when I can afford it!) so I think it would be amazing to travel to Europe to ski the Swiss Alps at some point in my life. There are many outstanding ski resorts in the U.S., but if it's "anywhere" the Swiss Alps would take the cake.
Which superhero power would you want to have?
It's cliche, but the ability to fly...preferably at supersonic speeds. It would be great to never have to worry about being late again, being stuck in traffic, or the cost of a plane ticket.
