Spartan Spotlight: Joe Tillman

Eighth grade geography teacher Joe Tillman joined the Athens Academy faculty 23 years ago, and while he has coached football and soccer over the years, he currently coaches middle school girls' basketball. A native of Athens, he attended Athens Academy and graduated from the University of Georgia. He is married to fellow Athens Academy faculty member Trish Tillman, who teaches sixth grade language arts.

We asked Mr. Tillman five questions as part of the Spartan Spotlight:

What do you consider to be unique about Athens Academy?
The level of commitment each teacher gives to personally help each student.

What are your hobbies?
Hunting, fishing, camping and woodworking

If you could take a trip anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I would go to the Yukon River in  Alaska, to see the nature, experience the wild, and fish the great waters.

Outside of the sport you coach, which Athens Academy alum athlete did you admire and enjoy watching compete?
Jill Razor (Class of 1997). She had skills no doubt—she was a state-record-holder in basketball with the highest career points. Even more impressive was her work ethic and team leadership. Her drive and leadership paved the way for a great team in the Final Four.

Which superhero power would you want to have?
Superman’s ability to fly!
