Music

Athens Academy is pleased to provide students in all divisions the opportunity to study music--from the very youngest Preschoolers learning about rhythym with simple instruments, up through senior orchestra students performing with a statewide honors orchestra.

  • Preschool

    Beginning in Preschool, students attend general music classes twice a week. These classes are taught to help create a life-long love and appreciation of music. Preschool students explore the world of music through singing, playing a variety of pitched and un-pitched rhythm instruments, movement, and composition. Students explore basic music concepts such as beat, note values, pitch, and rhythm. Each year, Preschool students prepare music and perform for special Athens Academy events such as Grandparents and Special Friends Day and Festival Day, as well as their respective grade-level musical productions. 
  • Lower School

    Lower School students study music through singing, playing instruments, movement, composition, and music history. In the second grade, every student participates in the string orchestra program, with violin or viola as the instruments of choice. Students may opt to continue with the orchestra in grades 3 and 4, with the additional options of the cello and double bass. Each year Lower School students prepare music and perform for special Athens Academy events such as Grandparents and Special Friends Day and Festival Day, as well as their respective grade-level musical productions. Orchestra students perform frequently for family and friends in school assemblies and scheduled evening concerts.
  • Middle School

    Band, string orchestra, and chorus are offered as fine arts electives in the Middle School curriculum at Athens Academy. String orchestra is offered in grades 5-8. Band and chorus are offered in grades 6-8.
  • Upper School

    Music education at Athens Academy continues through the Upper School, with opportunities in string orchestra, band, jazz band, pep band, and chorus. These outstanding music programs have produced many student musicians who have played for events across the state of Georgia. Numerous music students participate in the Athens Youth Symphony program and the Georgia Children's Chorus. Beginning in sixth grade, students may audition for the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) All-State Band, All-State Orchestra, and All-State Chorus competitions. Individual students have the opportunity to participate in and/or audition for a variety of honor groups sponsored by the GMEA, Georgia Independent Schools Association, Athens Youth Symphony, Georgia Children's Chorus, and University of Georgia.
